The mid-1990s were a fertile period for vampire films, drawing big-name stars like Tom Cruise and Eddie Murphy, as well as acclaimed filmmakers such as Francis Ford Coppola, Wes Craven, John Landis, Michael Almereyda, Jeffrey Arsenault, Quentin Tarantino, and Guillermo del Toro. Amid the fangs and crucifixes, director Abel Ferrara reunited with his King of New York star Christopher Walken for The Addiction, a uniquely personal take on creatures of the night.

Philosophy student Kathleen (Lili Taylor, The Conjuring) is attacked in an alley on her way home from class by the enigmatic Casanova (Annabella Sciorra, The Hand That Rocks the Cradle) and bitten on the neck. Soon after, she falls mysteriously ill, developing an aversion to daylight and an insatiable thirst for human blood…

Following his big-budget foray into sci-fi with Body Snatchers, Ferrara returns to a raw and intimate approach with The Addiction. Shot on the streets of New York, like many of his major works (The Driller Killer, Ms. 45, Bad Lieutenant), and beautifully filmed in stark black and white, the film showcases Ferrara at his most intense, intelligent, and masterful.
