Set during the final days of the Spanish Civil War, the film follows 12-year-old Carlos as he arrives at a remote orphanage for children of left-wing families while General Franco’s fascist forces close in on victory. Shortly after arriving, Carlos discovers that the orphanage is haunted by Santi, a dead boy who stalks its dark hallways and seeks revenge for the tragedy that ended his life.

Blending supernatural horror, historical drama, and political allegory, The Devil’s Backbone remains one of Guillermo del Toro’s defining early films.
