It’s like they took the checklist used for every other friends’ getaway movie and literally checked the boxes off as they cast it and wrote the script. Hire three talented and recognizable actors who don’t cost too much, check. Bring in one newbie to offset the quartet, check. Allow every character to not only have a high-paying job but also one they can walk away from for a long weekend with zero notice, check. One needs to be getting over a breakup. One needs to be lonely and confused despite being super hot and wealthy. One needs to be ditzy and impressionable. And one needs to be zany. Check, check, check, check.
No surprises here. My theater had maybe 50 people, with more than half being the target audience, who cackled and laughed at all the right parts. I even heard one, “You tell ’em, sista!” They liked this formulaic, brainless comedy much more than I did. Sure, three of the women were fun to look at, but they were all victims of a terrible script and a paycheck they couldn’t say no to. Not their fault.
If you haven’t seen it yet, you could just as easily guess it: four friends take a much-needed spa weekend getaway to reconnect with each other and their inner selves. Some find love they didn’t know they needed or had time for. Some change jobs by literally quitting their current job and getting hired for a new one, all in one weekend, while on vacation. Some come to terms with where they stand in their friend group. But by Sunday afternoon, everyone has learned their respective lessons, all is forgiven, and everyone is a better person.
It’s a cute film with some zany antics.
